White Star Line First Class Gimbal Lamp

RMS Olympic, 1911, Tom Rudderham Collection, White Star Heritage Collection
Electric lighting was still a novelty in 1912.

People were used to carrying candles around the home, so cabin lamps were designed to be similar. When they weren’t attached to a hook on the wall, they could be carried around the cabin and placed on desks.

This gimbal lamp is a rare survivor and still retains its electrical cord, switch and bulb holder. Manufactured by William McGeoch, lamps such as this adorned both first and second class cabins onboard the RMS Titanic and Olympic.
