Titanic movie (1997) Action Lifejacket

RMS Titanic, 1997, Tom Rudderham Collection

This lifejacket was worn by characters Tommy Ryan (Jason Barry) and Fabrizio De Rossi ( Danny Nucci), in the 1997 movie Titanic. Sporting a bullethole and stained pink from the artificial blood used during production, this lifejacket was worn by both characters during the sinking scene of the movie.

The scene in which First Officer William Murdoch shoots two passengers and then himself, is mired in controversy. Director James Cameron now considers the way he portrayed Murdoch a mistake, and a studio executive contributed £5,000 to the Dalbeattie memorial fund in his name as an apology.

While there is evidence of shootings aboard the Titanic, when and where they happened has been a matter of debate. There are eyewitness accounts of an officer firing shots, though accounts differ about whether they were warning shots or whether the officer shot passengers in the process. There are further accounts of an officer shooting himself as the boat sank; however, very little evidence ties either of these events to Murdoch.
