Purchased, written and posted from onboard the Titanic, shortly after its departure in Southampton.
Only a handful of postcards written and mailed from the Titanic survive to this day, making this an incredibly significant artifact, and one with a poignant story to tell.
The postcard was written on board the ship by 16-year-old Thomas Cupper Mudd, a Second Class passenger traveling to America to start a new life.
Thomas was one of 13 children. His older brothers, George and James, had already emigrated and invited Thomas to join them. They even paid for his ticket on the Titanic and were excited to see him again in the New World.
Tragically, Thomas did not survive the sinking of the Titanic. His body was never found, and his brothers blamed themselves for the rest of their lives.
The postcard reads:
“Dear Mother,
Arrived at Southampton safe. The Titanic is a splendid boat and you hardly know you are moving. Will write more fully later.
Your loving son,
Tom
PS – Please send Edie’s address, also send her this card as I do not know it.”
