Rust from the Titanic

RMS Titanic, 1912, Tom Rudderham Collection

An entire tray of rust flakes recovered from the "Big Piece".

As the iron hull of the Titanic is consumed by the bacteria Halomonas titanicae, the iron is metabolised, turning the surface into layers of fragile rust.

These particular rust flakes were deposited from the ‘Big Piece’ while it was displayed at various exhibitions in the early 2000s. The ‘Big Piece’ is now permanently on display at the Luxor Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
