This photograph negative was captured by Captain De Carteret of the C.S. Minia, one of the few cable ships dispatched to the site of the Titanic disaster to recover bodies and debris.
Take a closer look at the dark smudge visible on the side of the iceberg. Captain De Carteret reported this as a streak of red paint, a striking detail given that the Titanic’s hull was coated in the same shade of red.
If his account holds true, this photograph may depict the very iceberg that sealed the Titanic’s fate on the fateful night of April 14, 1912, forever etching it into history as a silent witness to the tragedy.
